Altmaier in top form in the round of 16

Daniel Altmaier defeats the seventh-seeded Canadian in Japan and advances to the round of 16.

After strong performances at the US Open, Daniel Altmaier has also proven his good form in Tokyo. In the first round of the ATP tournament in the Japanese capital, the Kempen native somewhat surprisingly defeated former top 10 player Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-3. The Canadian was seeded seventh in the $2,226,470 competition. Altmaier, currently 50th in the ATP rankings, showed great concentration against the world number 26 and earned his place in the round of 16.

Altmaier had already caused a sensation at the Grand Slam tournament in New York before his injury-related withdrawal in the third round against Alex de Minaur (Australia). In the second round, he defeated former Greek top player Stefanos Tsitsipas in five hard-fought sets.
