Andre Agassi provided an entertaining moment at the Laver Cup. During the prize-giving ceremony, the American took a dig at Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Zverev led Team Europe to their next Laver Cup triumph with his victory over Learner Tien. Afterwards, tennis legend Andre Agassi provided a laugh – at the German’s expense.
The Team World captain used the victory ceremony following his side’s defeat to deliver a humorous speech, singling out Zverev in particular. First, the eight-time Grand Slam winner congratulated the German on his strong year. Then Agassi followed up with a tongue-in-cheek dig.
“Congratulations on your crazy year. I know how important it was for you to finally win,” Agassi said, addressing Zverev. The American then joked: “It was important for me too, because now I can watch your press conferences again.”
Agassi has a bit of fun at Zverev’s expense
Agassi was alluding to the German’s previous lack of Grand Slam titles and imitated his supposed self-doubt: “Before that, it was always just: ‘Boo-hoo, why do I always lose? I’m only the third-best in the world, I’m so bad.’ But then you win and it’s still: ‘Oh, I’ve only got one Grand Slam, I’ve got to do it again, boo-hoo.’“
The quip went down a treat with players and the audience alike. Whilst everyone around him was laughing, Zverev also reacted with a smile to the former world number one’s interlude.
Zverev had previously secured the decisive point for Team Europe with a 7–6, 6–3 victory over the American Learner Tien, thereby sealing another title win in the prestigious team competition.
