After just two months: Bayern terminate contract with Spencer Dinwiddie

Due to a serious illness in his family, Spencer Dinwiddie had already returned to his home country, the USA, before Christmas. Now it is clear that the long-time NBA player will not be returning.

As the Munich club writes on its website, a mutual agreement has been reached to terminate the contract, which was originally set to run until the end of the season.

“I would like to thank the organization, the team, and the fans. Despite the recent difficult phase of the season, I have felt very comfortable in Munich,” the 32-year-old was quoted as saying. “Unfortunately, however, I am currently unable to play,” he continued.

The statement also includes comments from sporting director Dragan Tarlac, who expresses his sympathy for Dinwiddie’s personal situation: “Sometimes other things are more important than sports. Health comes first, and we sincerely hope that everything works out for Spencer and his family in 2026.”

Dinwiddie never really settled in Munich

Spencer Dinwiddie only joined FC Bayern at the end of October after spending eleven years shooting hoops in the NBA. Until recently, the point guard had struggled to integrate into the European basketball system. In 17 games for Munich, he averaged just 12.1 points per game with 39.1 percent from the field.

In their press release, Bayern left open whether they would be looking for a replacement. One thing is clear: since the change of coach, FCBB has only lost its opening game against EuroLeague leaders Hapoel. The team also recently ended its long losing streak in the top flight with a statement victory against Maccabi. In the BBL, they now have ten wins in a row. Rumors had recently been circulating that coach Svetislav Pesic could radically rebuild Bayern’s backcourt. According to the report, guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes is about to leave, while a replacement is already being considered. Read more about it here.
