After Another Early Playoff Exit: Magic Fire Coach Mosley

For the third consecutive year, the Orlando Magic were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Despite holding a 3-1 series lead against the Detroit Pistons, the Magic were eliminated without the injured Franz Wagner. Personnel changes followed the next day.

It was clear even before their playoff exit early Monday morning that personnel changes were coming for the Orlando Magic during the offseason. After a generally disappointing season—one in which the Magic started with high hopes but nearly missed the playoffs at the end of the regular season—they managed to secure a spot among the top eight via the play-ins. But against top-seeded Detroit, despite a 3-1 series lead, their run came to an end after three straight losses. The final game was a crushing 94-116 defeat in which the Magic were no match for their opponents.

The firing of Head Coach Jamahl Mosley therefore comes as no surprise; the 47-year-old had recently come under increasing criticism. “It’s been an absolutely incredible journey with these guys,” he had reflected immediately after the crushing defeat in Detroit. A day after the elimination, Jeff Weltman, the Magic’s President of Basketball Operations, confirmed the dismissal.

Mosley failed three times in a row in Round 1

“We are grateful to Jamahl for everything he has done for the Orlando Magic,” said Weltman. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach. Although this was a difficult decision, we believe it is time for a new approach and a fresh perspective. We wish Jamahl and his family all the best.”

Mosley, who never made it to the NBA as a player, had been the Magic’s head coach since the summer of 2021 and had extended his contract by four years in 2024. After his young team, led by Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero—whom the Magic drafted in 2022—missed the playoffs by a wide margin in their first two seasons under Mosley, they have since consistently made it into the top 8, but the Florida franchise has never advanced past the first round.

The Magic have recently been plagued by injuries

In 2023/24, they finished the regular season in fifth place in the East and suffered a dramatic 3-4 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The following year, the Magic struggled with the absence of many key players, including Banchero and the Wagner brothers, resulting in another first-round exit as Boston proved too strong (1-4).

Injury woes continued to plague Orlando this season as well, particularly Franz Wagner, and as a result, the team was never able to get into the momentum they had hoped for. After taking a 3-1 lead against Detroit, hope was rekindled that the season might still end on a positive note and at least last longer than in previous years. That hope was dashed by Monday night at the latest.
