Addo successor found: Queiroz takes over at Ghana for the World Cup

Otto Addo was sacked as Ghana’s national team coach after the 2-1 defeat to Germany. Now the association has found a successor: Carlos Queiroz will take over as coach for the World Cup.

There is not much time left until the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. The opening match will take place on June 11 and the Ghanaian national team will kick off the tournament on June 18 (1 a.m. CEST) with a match against Panama. Around two months before the World Cup opener, Ghana’s national association has now found a successor to Otto Addo, who was dismissed after the 2-1 defeat to Germany: Portuguese Carlos Queiroz will take over as national coach for the World Cup.

Alongside many national teams, he was also coach of Real

The 73-year-old has been working as a national team coach for decades: His first job in this field was as head coach of Portugal between 1991 and 1993, and he later also worked as a club coach for Sporting (1993-1996) and Real Madrid (2003-2004), among others, and as an assistant coach at Manchester United (2002-2003 and 2004-2008). However, he is particularly fond of the national teams.

Ghana is the tenth country that Queiroz has taken over as national coach. In addition to Portugal, where he also had a second term between 2008 and 2010, the Portuguese has also worked for the United Arab Emirates (1999), Saudi Arabia (2000), South Africa (2001-2002), Iran (2011-2019 and 2022-2023), Colombia (2019-2020), Egypt (2021-2022), Qatar (2023) and Oman (2025-2026).

Reached the last 16 of the World Cup with Portugal in 2010

His greatest successes as national team coach were qualifying for the World Cup with South Africa in 2002, qualifying for the World Cup with Iran in 2014 and 2018 and reaching the round of 16 with Portugal in 2010.

According to a statement from the association, Queiroz will start work with Ghana “immediately” – after all, there is not much time to prepare for the tournament. In addition to Panama, the coach will also face England (June 23, 10 p.m.) and Croatia (June 27, 11 p.m.) with the “Black Stars”. It is still unclear what will happen after the World Cup for Queiroz and as coach of Ghana.
