Abt expands its partnership with Lamborghini: DTM title a clear target for 2027!

Abt extends its partnership with Lamborghini on a long-term basis: how the programme is being expanded and how the team aims to secure its first DTM drivers’ title since 2009

The former long-standing Audi team, Abt, is continuing its partnership with Lamborghini beyond the 2026 season after three years and will even step up its commitment. The Kempten-based team has officially announced this in a press release.

“The long-term continuation of our partnership with Lamborghini is a very significant step for Abt,” Abt Managing Director Thomas Biermaier is quoted as saying. “Lamborghini is an exceptional brand with enormous appeal, and we are proud not only to continue this collaboration in the coming years, but also to expand it further.”

Both companies have agreed to extend their partnership for several years and will significantly expand their joint motorsport programme from the 2027 season onwards, according to the press release.

Abt reveals details about 2027 and sets its sights on the DTM title

Abt has not disclosed the duration of the partnership extension. However, the plans for 2027 have already been announced: Abt confirms that it will remain committed to the DTM and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Furthermore, the team is entering the GT Winter Series organised by Gedlich and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo one-make cup, in which the cup version of the new Lamborghini Temerario will be used for the first time in 2027.

Abt has also already revealed details of its plans for 2027. Two Lamborghini Temerario GT3s are set to continue competing in the DTM – the name “Red Bull Team Abt” indicates that the Austrian energy drink group will be sponsoring the team for the fourth year running.

Abt intends to announce at a later date who will be behind the wheel in the DTM and the other programmes in 2027. Following a difficult debut season with the new Temerario GT3 – in which, unlike in 2025, the team put in a strong performance against the established Lamborghini team Grasser – Abt aims to take the next step in the coming season.

“Our ambition for 2027 is clear. Together with Red Bull and Lamborghini, we want to fight for the championship again and bring the next title back to Kempten. That is why we are deliberately investing heavily in our preparations and will, amongst other things, use the GT Winter Series to clock up as many valuable race kilometres as possible before the start of the season,” announces Biermaier.

As a reminder: although Abt has already won a total of ten titles in the DTM, the last Abt drivers’ title, secured by Timo Scheider in 2009, was a long time ago. This dry spell is now set to come to an end.

Is the GT Winter Series the key to success?

Part of the plan involves competing in the GT Winter Series: Abt aims to gain experience in the series, which takes place in southern Europe during the winter, with the Temerario GT3 and, according to the team, “make targeted use of the additional race kilometres to further optimise the car, processes and teamwork”.

This is intended to ensure that Abt starts the new DTM season in 2027 “as well prepared as possible”. Whilst the Temerario GT3 has already been used in the DTM this year, the switch from the Huracán GT3 Evo2 to Lamborghini’s new GT3 car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife will not take place until next season.

Following the disqualification at this year’s 24-hour race – because the engine power did not match the reference measurement – Abt has a clear objective for its first year with the Temerario GT3 on the Nordschleife: together with Lamborghini, the aim is to “fight for overall victory”, according to the press release.

In the Lamborghini Super Trofeo one-make series, in which Abt is competing for the first time, the team says it will field two Lamborghini Temerario Super Trofeo cars. A total of four drivers will share the two cars.
