After a delay of nearly a month, the Brooklyn Nets announced the signing of Moritz Wagner. The delay was due to financial reasons.
News of the agreement between the Brooklyn Nets and Moritz Wagner had already leaked on July 2, and the Berlin native had spoken about his new team long ago on his podcast *Kannst du so nicht sagen*; yet it wasn’t until July 31 that the Nets officially announced the move.
The German will earn $19 million over the next two years, with a mutual option to terminate the contract early next summer.
The reason for the delay in the official announcement was likely strategic. The Nets were presumably testing the market to see if they could still orchestrate trades with their cap space, but apparently couldn’t find a good deal, which is why they used that cap space to sign Wagner.
Shortly thereafter, the Orlando Magic also bid farewell to the German player with a short tribute video on social media. Wagner played for the Florida franchise for over five years, appearing in 277 games during that time. In an average of 17.2 minutes per game, Wagner averaged 10.1 points and 4.2 rebounds on 52.5 percent shooting.
