“A Chapter Comes to an End”: Former National Team Player Max Retires

Former German national team player Philipp Max, who had been without a club since early May 2026, announced the end of his career on Sunday in an emotional post on Instagram.

In the summer of 2024, Philipp Max had bid farewell to the Bundesliga; the then-30-year-old left Eintracht Frankfurt for Greece. Despite his age, Max still had 23 Bundesliga appearances to his credit for Eintracht Frankfurt, and he added nine league games and two Conference League matches while at Panathinaikos in Athens. In March of this year, the now 32-year-old made another attempt abroad, with Gamba Osaka announcing the signing of the defender. After just seven weeks, he closed that chapter in Japan; due to his “physical condition,” he terminated the contract early. Now Max is closing yet another chapter—he is ending his long career.

“A chapter is coming to an end,” he writes. “I’m already sad,” he shares in an emotional Instagram post, “that I’m leaving behind what I’ve lived for and worked toward my entire life.” But he left no doubt that the decision to end his career was the right one. “I came to the conclusion relatively quickly that it’s best to hang up my cleats now.”

Debut for Schalke

After a long career, during which he also played three international matches for the German national team in 2020. Max made 180 appearances in the Bundesliga, celebrating his debut in Germany’s top division during the 2013–14 season with FC Schalke 04. He made two appearances for Schalke, 145 for FC Augsburg, and 33 for Frankfurt, in addition to numerous matches on the European stage and 106 appearances for top Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven, with whom he finished as runner-up three times.

“It’s hard to find the right words to describe this moment,” said an emotional Max, who is now at peace with the fact that he will no longer be on the field. “It’s okay for me. Still, it feels like closing a chapter that has somehow defined my whole life.”
