90.+8! Fabio Carvalho gives Liverpool last-minute win against Newcastle

Liverpool FC fought their way back to their second win of the season – and they did so after trailing 0:1. Fabio Carvalho scored late on against Newcastle United to make it 2-1.

After the 9-0 win over Bournemouth, Reds coach Jürgen Klopp made no changes to his starting eleven and sent the same personnel onto the pitch against Newcastle.

For Newcastle, however, Saint-Maximin, who scored the late equaliser against Wolverhampton last weekend, was absent through injury. Newcomer Isak, on the other hand, made it straight into the starting eleven, starting in the centre of the attack.

In a game that was hard-fought time and again, Liverpool started superior, but the Reds rarely created dangerous scoring chances. The best chance was missed after more than half an hour by Luis Diaz after a strong pass from Roberto Firmino (34th).

Isak scores on debut

Newcastle made it difficult for their opponents by being well-positioned and created their own offensive opportunities: Fraser shot over the Liverpool goal (18th), Trippier took a free-kick too centrally (29th).

Then came the appearance of Isak: The former Dortmund player had so far mainly been busy running at Liverpool’s centre-backs. In a phase of pressure for the Reds, however, Longstaff put a ball through to Isak, who had come from Real Sociedad and had run in on the right side. The striker finished ice-cold to give the visitors the lead (38th).

Isak’s second goal does not count, Fabio Carvalho scores in the last second

After the break, it was the visitors who rejoiced again, but only briefly: Isak’s supposed second goal was disallowed for offside (54th). Shortly afterwards, it was up to the Reds to celebrate: After Elliot had failed to beat Pope (60th), Roberto Firmino scored the equaliser (61st) after Salah had done the groundwork for him.

Liverpool then pressed the visitors, but nothing came from them. Luis Diaz failed twice within a short space of time (79th, 81st), but then came the final action, a corner kick for the Reds – deep in stoppage time. Salah did not get the ball into the goal, but Newcastle did not clear the situation either – and so Fabio Carvalho dusted off from close range (90.+8).

With this last-minute goal, Liverpool secured their second win in a row. Newcastle, on the other hand, have to swallow their first defeat of the season. On Saturday, both teams are in action again: Liverpool play the Merseyside derby at Everton FC at 1.30 pm. Shortly afterwards (4pm), Newcastle host Crystal Palace.
